The Ethiopian Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau has been established with the following objectives:
Conducting independent and impartial investigation on aircraft accidents/incidents
Identifying root causes and contributing factors of the Accident/Incident
Formulating safety recommendations to prevent recurrences
Avoiding apportion blame and liability
The role of the Bureau is to:
Investigate aircraft Accident and Incidents that occurred to Civil Aircraft operation in Ethiopian airspace and publish reports on the final results in accordance with the standards of International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Annex-13, AIB Proclamation, Regulation and Policies and procedures Manual.
Prevent aircraft Accidents and Incidents and improve Aviation Safety by determining the cause Safety Recommendations intended to prevent recurrence.
Assure all facts and circumstances leading to an accident or incident are recorded in data base and evaluated to prevent similar occurrence in the future.
Follow up implementation of Aviation Safety Recommendations.
Reporting of accidents and incidents
It is very essential that all aviation accidents and incidents involving civil registered aircraft which occurred in the territory of Ethiopia be notified immediately to the AIB by the following address using the quickest means available. As stated in art. 16.1 of AIB proclamation, pilots in command, owners, operators and air traffic controllers are mandatorily obliged to report the occurrence to the AIB as soon as possible. Anyone who witnesses an aviation accident or incident shall voluntarily report to the AIB or the nearby government body (police, regional administration office e.t.c )
The information in the report in the report shall include but not limited to the following:
Aircraft model/type and registration
Location of the occurrence
Date & time of the occurrence
Name of the owner /operator
Damage of the aircraft and other properties
Accessibility and nature of the accident site(access roads, weather, condition of the terrain e.t.c)
Extent of injuries and fatalities
Nature and description of the occurrence
Name and telephone numbers of the reporter and other related information
